Burt's Bees Natural Solutions for Sensistive Skin

So the latest Buzz Campaign I was able to participate in was the Burt's Bees Natural Skin Solutions for Sensitive Skin.

My skin is pretty fair and I get a lot of redness and sometimes get tight and itchy from certain harsh products. I was super excited to get to try this new line for several reasons:
1. Burt's Bees Natural Skin Solutions for Sensitive Skin is 99% natural and since I am pregnant I've been being a lot more mindful of what I put on my skin.
2. I already love the Burt's Bees brand and I'm addicted to their chap stick.
3. I was looking for a moisturizer since winter is quickly approaching.

As part of the campaign I was sent a full size cleanser and Daily moisturizing lotion to try. Do you like the kind of cleanser that is very creamy? Then I suggest you give this cleanser a try. It left my face feeling soft and moisturized - no tight cheeks for me! It was also effective at removing my makeup, but not all of my eye makeup. I typically need to use an additional product for this anyway, so it was not a deal breaker for me. Let's face it, eyeliner and waterproof mascara can be a pain to get off.

What I liked most about the cleanser was the consistency. What I disliked about it was it did not really help clear my skin any more than any other product I had been trying. But again, I am pregnant so my skin has been doing things it has never done before! I think for someone with normal skin and some sensitivity this product would work great.

As for the moisturizer, it comes in a cute little pump. I feel that it gave me just a bit too much product in one pump, but then I started using it on my dry spots and on my neck, so if you do that, its practically the perfect amount. Again, since I am pregnant, I think this was even a little too much moisture for me. My skin has been more oily than its ever been. Normally my skin is combination. Now that the weather is changing though I notice that my skin is getting less oily. So I think under normal circumstances this moisturizer would be perfect for me.

So I kind of have a big announcement to make...
And I've been debating on whether or not to share this on my blog, but I figured what the heck.
Yep, that's a cheesy self baby bump portrait! My baby bump at 15 weeks and 3 days. I'm umm *slightly* bigger than that now at 17 weeks and 5 days. You could say I really "popped" over the last week, but alas, I don't have a pic for this week. Hopefully I will get dressed in some real clothes and take a nice photo - er - have someone else take a nice photo of me and Photoshop it so I look cute.
So to recap - I'm having a baby in February and I take really bad pictures of myself. :)

I know. I know. I am the most inconsistent blogger on the blogosphere! But I hope you'll forgive me! I just wanted to share some photos from my long awaited vacation to Hawaii. We went there on our honeymoon and made a pact to go back in 5 years to celebrate our anniversary. Well, we made it happen. And by we I mean my husband because I wasn't willing to spend the money, though I had NO problem spending some when we got there. Anyway without further ado, I give you beautiful Maui:

We loved snorkeling and this honu (turtle) swam right by us, IT is was really cool! Actually we had two turtle encounters, but hubby had the camera for the other one and therefore there are no pictures of it.

Just dropping in to leave a brief update. Sorry I've been MIA for a while. Life gets in the way of this blog a lot hahaha.

So on Friday I am getting my kidney stone removed. Doesn't sound like a ton of fun and it is four days before hubby and I leave on our big vacation. The doctor assured me that all would be fine, so I am confident in his abilities. They use a laser which makes me instantly picture a scene from Star Wars going on inside my bladder. Weird.

So as for this awesome vacation - stay tunes next month for pics! I plan to take a ton. And maybe even a video? We are celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary and this is probably our last vacation just the two of us. So this is a special one and the first vacation we've really done just the two of us since our honeymoon. I am so excited!!!

Baby making isn't so easy for all of us

Today I feel bummed out.
I haven't told any of you this yet but we have begun the process of starting a family. Sounds odd saying things that way, right? I mean under the perfect circumstances there wouldn't really be a process. Just a bit of planning. Well, from the events of the last six months, this is definitely a process. I didn't know how much I'd want to share here on my blog, but writing about my feelings and experiences is just so therapeutic, I can't afford not to share. Plus, maybe some of you will have some advice.

If you are not into gross woman talk, you can (and should) stop here. You've been warned.

So the most obvious step in starting a family was for me to stop taking the pill, so I did in October. I did not get a period after I stopped. So I went to the doctor thinking, it can't really be this easy, can it? Nope. I had to take a dose of Provera to bring it on (this was December). Then I had to wait and see if I got my period on my own after that time. No luck. The doctor determined from this (and a few ultrasounds) that I am not ovulating on my own. So he prescribed me another dose of Provera (early March) and the lowest dose of Clomid. I was told to test for ovulation using ovulation predictor strips. Today is my cycle day 19. They told me if I did not ovulate by day 18 to call. So I will be calling today and probably getting the higher dose of Clomid, in hopes it will work. I wish there were some natural way to get my body functioning. And I also just wish it would hurry up and function already! In the big picture, six months is not that long and everything takes time. And actually I have made some really good changes in my life in that time - I've reduced my caffeine intake, I have lost a couple of pounds (don't get too excited its literally a couple of pounds haha), I have increased my exercise and I've increased the amount of water I drink everyday. So I guess all this waiting hasn't been in vain, it has all been a chance for me to grow.
Have any of you used Clomid? Any luck? Any advice? Please share!! And thanks for reading!

Drugstore FAIL

Anyone else caught a cold this winter? I'm suffering through one now. Bleh! I've been drinking tons of fluid and taking vitamin D on top of my normal multi-vitamin. I sent my hubby to the drugstore. It was a major fail. He bought the wrong kind of Advil, which I can totally get over, but he also bought lemon-scented Vick's. I didn't even know there was such a thing! I think I'll be taking it back for the normal version. Unless someone out there has tried it and thinks it smells good? I just have this idea of it smelling like furniture polish. Not so good. Sad too because I love slathering myself in it when I'm sick. Guess the best way to get what you want is to do it yourself. *sigh* Even if it means exposing the CVS employees to my cold and myself to whatever the rest of the sick people in CVS have. Ooooh but on a good note I can get the Covergirl lipstick I've been wanting with my coupon from the PG insert! Don't worry I won't use it until I am germ free. :)

I got a new cell phone over the holidays, but that is not what this post is all about. With my phone (which was free!) I was able to download all of Taylor Swift's albums (also free!). And I have been listening to them like crazy.
I knew all of her songs that were on the radio, but while listening to her new album I found a new song that I feel is pretty profound (well part of the lyric is anyway).

From her song Never Grow Up:
Take pictures in your mind of your childhood room
Memorize what it sounded like when your dad gets home
Remember the footsteps, remember the words said
And all your little brother's favorite songs
I just realized everything I have
Is someday gonna be gone

Does that resonate with anyone else right now? Is anyone ever ready to "grow up"? I feel like with all the things my family has been going though lately it just really spoke to me. I am so blessed to have three of my grandparents and both my parents and my in-laws around me. With my mother-in-laws surgery and her soon-to-start cancer treatment, it gave me a big dose of reality - Everything changes and everyone that surrounds me right now with love will someday be gone from this world. It lightens the burden though to know that someday I will see them all again. There will be many tears and a lot of patience until that day (and patience is NOT one of my virtues) but it will come!

And as for growing up, it might be inevitable that things get complicated and that you get hurt by others, but you also get to experience love and kindness from others as well as being able to share your own love and kindness! So be sure to live today and hug your loved ones a few extra times. Appreciate what you do have and what you will have one day!

Today I am irritated. At myself mostly. I just want to be a better version of myself and yet I am feeling like there are so many things I need to change that I don't even know where to begin.
And I'm also irritated at myself being irritated. I had a friend call today and complain about some things that are so minor. This happens a lot. I don't mind listening to her problems, but there are days, like today, when I want to stop her and say "Is it my turn now?" I know everyone is dealing with something. We are all just trying to live life, right? We all have day-to-day struggles. But not this girl, she thinks she has minute-to-minute struggles. And if she could step back and look at the big picture, she would see that everything she worries about is small stuff. And little to none of it warrants a phone call or conversation about whether this person should worry about it. And yet it happens over and over and over again. And I'm irritated that I feel like a bad friend for finding this behavior so annoying lately. I guess its just because I have so many more responsibilities lately. And the fact that I want to surround myself with people who help me be the best version of me. And I'm starting to doubt that she is really one of those people.

The year ahead for me

If you asked me today, which you didn't, but I'm going to answer anyway, 2011 feels like it will be one of the hardest years I've ever had.

My mother in law has to have chemo for ovarian cancer. She is scared but putting on a brave face. I am also scared and want to be the best daughter I can be. We have one of those unheard of close relationships. I have no doubt that she will get through this, but it is difficult to deal with the heavy realities that dealing with any major illness brings on. Her surgery was very successful. They removed a volleyball sized mass from her ovary (they did a complete hysterectomy) and feel they got everything. So the chemo is pretty much a preventative measure they are taking. We are blessed to have such a wonderful prognosis. But the bottom line here is that she still has to go through the fight of her life and we have to stay strong and support her through it all. I just hope I am able to keep it together for her and for my husband. Right now I'm not so sure I can.

On a more positive note, I've made a few goals for this year. I think I will leave them to another post - there is much to get finished today and if I keep typing it will never get done!

Prayers Needed!

Hello everyone!
Sorry the posts have been few and far between.
Its been a rough week for my family and we could sure use some prayers. Mark's mom is having surgery next week to remove a mass/tumor they found on her ovary and uterus. We are all a little frightened by this whole thing. (Ok, so I am really frightened) We are hoping that they can remove all of the mass and that it is benign. The doctor suspects is may be ovarian cancer. I hate that c-word. We are trying to take this one day at a time and stay positive until we know exactly what is going on, but it can be so hard.
We are trying to plan out meals for my in-laws post surgery and also attempting to get all the Christmas decorating finished as well, plus continue our normal routines (and bake cookies...I always bake cookies!). Do any of you have any easy nourishing recipes that I can make that might freeze well? I was thinking I'd start with some lighter meals like soups for the first few days and then do some casseroles of some sort. Any guidance is much appreciated. Why does it seem like these things always happen around the holidays?
Next post will be happier, I promise! I have a duck hunting trip to share as well as some knitting projects I have done. And I'm learning to crochet!

I'm feeling extremely thankful today and let me tell you what a wonderful feeling it is!
So let's get right to it, shall we?
This week I am thankful for:

My boss rescheduling our field work to the week after Thanksgiving! This way I get to spend some overdue quality time with my husband.
The sun which is shining brightly today - it has been absent this week so welcome back sun!
Starbuck's deal this week/weekend where you bogo holiday drinks - hello non-fat peppermint white chocolate mocha, no whip!
My aloe vera plant which is growing quite rapidly and probably will need re-potted soon!
Stash merrymint tea. Having a nice cuppa right now.
This blog I've been reading daily: A Girl and a Glue Gun This gal is crazy crafty and has SO many cool ideas. Really. You should check her out. Someday I hope I am half as crafty and productive!
Hungry Girl's egg mug recipes. I forgot how great these things were! I had the egg mug lorraine this morning. There are tons more on her site too if you just search for "egg mug"
Sweater weather. I big red puffy heart sweater weather!
Knitting books. I'm teaching myself to knit :) So far I've got the garter and stockinette stitches down. Going to learn ribs this weekend and then make something fun (I'll share if it is not too disastrous)
Candles - specifically the BBW Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin. I've been burning mine so often that I will need a new one soon! (Here that BBW, time to have a SALE on candles for me!)

I saw this facebook post about a tradition where everyone in the family writes what they are thankful for on the tablecloth in a fabric pen. What a great idea to start! What keeps you motivated?

I've gotten a small reprieve from my traveling! I don't have to leave again until the week after Thanksgiving! That makes me feel a bit calmer since everyone is coming here to eat this year. I will not be cooking though, only supplying the room. But if you saw the state of my house right now, you would see why I need the extra time home to prepare. Plus my husband has decided that I am to go duck hunting with this this weekend. I will not be shooting anything or even carrying a gun. I'm just going for the experience and for the time he and I can share while doing something that he seems to really enjoy. And isn't that what marriage is all about? :)

So today I wanted to ask you all, what keeps you motivated? I was in the doctors office yesterday and it seemed like every magazine I picked up had some article on losing weight or getting healthy. All the food plans were different, but one thing that was the same was this: finding and keeping your motivation. One thing I notice about myself is that when I remember WHY I am choosing to eat better and exercise I am more likely to stick with it. After my wedding I lost about 40 pounds using Weight Watchers (both online and then in meetings). My starting motivation then was seeing myself as a marshmallow bride and wanting to look and feel better in my clothes. What a great feeling it is to succeed! Fast forward to now - I've gained about 25 pounds back. And I feel. like. crap. My clothes are clingy, my jeans are tight and giving me the feared muffin top. I'm losing my desire to go out in public for fear I might see someone I know and they will see how FAT I have gotten. There are no excuses for this. I've more than fallen off the wagon - I think the following wagon ran me over! That must be why I'm so swollen!
Anyway, the point I'm trying to make here is that there must be a "why" for anyone to commit to doing anything. And it doesn't always have to be one big reason, it can be a bunch of things, as long as it motivates you and keeps you going on your journey. My current motivators: my jeans are too small and I refuse to buy more, my muffin top has got to go, I feel horrible, and the extra weight I'm carrying might play a huge role in having (or being able to have) children.
So what keeps you motivated? Please share! It doesn't even have to pertain to weight - it could be what motivates you to get up in the morning!

Back to Myself

So how did I get out of my funk from last week you ask? Well, it was a combination of several things.
First and foremost, I prayed.
Second, I listened to my favorite music.
Third, I exercised last night.
And Last, but not least, I realized that even when I am unhappy with my situation, it will pass. It only makes it worse to sit and complain and sulk about it. So I have accepted my "fate" so to speak and will be traveling for work, pretty much this entire month. I will not let this throw a wrench in my happiness.

Staying Positive

Last week was rough. I was sick and then I had to do field work in 50 degree weather and pouring rain. I was exhausted and soaked to the bone. I worked really hard! I feel like I should be super happy with myself for all that effort and planning I did to make the job a successful one. Instead I am dwelling on the negatives - not just the weather but the attitudes and energies possessed by some of the people I had to be around. They REALLY affected me to my core. It has taken the entire weekend to really recover and I am still emotionally exhausted. Mostly because now I need to gear up for MORE work this week and a big trip next week. I'm not looking forward to it at all. And it really gets me down since this is the kind of work I've always thought I would enjoy. I LOVE being outdoors! I love tromping through creeks and mud. So why can't I shake these negative feelings? And how do I overcome them?

Feeling Icky

I have an infection and the meds I'm taking interfere with another medicine I always take and it is making me and my tummy quite miserable. Plus I have a business trip this week. Today I am Thankful for:
My friends and readers who are there to support me and encourage me on my journey
My husband - that he is levelheaded when I am a wacko and stays calm when I am freaking out.
The car that is actually working. (I really love my Explorer!)
Money in the savings account that will cover the EXPENSIVE cost of getting the other car fixed.
The fact that we actually have 2 vehicles, even if one is not working right now.
My Extra Cat (yes, that is her name) who always seems to crawl in my lap when I am stressing out to calm me down. She must sense my BP rising or something.
Starbucks is close to where my husband works, so when we have to share the car, I get a grande non-fat white mocha (lovelovelove)
My deep freeze well-stocked with various meat. I may not love meat, but at least I'll never starve!

Weight issues Wednesday

Hello my readers! Welcome to Weight issues Wednesday! Yep, just made that up right off the top of the old noggin.
But seriously. Has anyone else noticed how HARD it is to lose weight? Yes, I know the facts: Eat less than you burn and you will lose weight, but is this magic formula as simple as that? It does not consider any emotional issues you have with food. It assumes that you have the willpower to forgo any sweet treat that passes under your nose. It is a daily struggle for me. Seems like I'll eat normal to well on most days, lose about 2 - 5 pounds (in maybe a week to ten days), have a weekend of eating everything in sight and gain it all back. How frustrating! So I am looking for some simple changes I can start applying to my everyday life to make my lifestyle healthier and happier. For example, one thing I've already changed is eating breakfast every morning. I used to skip this meal since I wasn't hungry, but to maintain your metabolism it is important to kick start your day with breakfast. There are also several things I'd like to change including (but not limited to):

Reducing my sugar intake but replacing with natural sweeteners like honey and stevia (right now I use splenda but will not repurchase if I can find a stevia alternative I can bake with)
Starting to eat cleaner - and I need help with this. If you have any info on this, please please please share! TIA! If you are unfamiliar with this term as far as I understand it it means replacing all the processed crap I eat with healthy stuff. Again, if you know more about this please share!
Eating vegetables. Or maybe I should say finding waysd to incorporate veggies into my life that aren't in a boring old salad - or finding some way to make a salad exciting.
Generally being more aware of food. You know, the emotional and behavioral side of eating. What am I feeling when I sit down and eat an entire pint of Ben and Jerry's and then feel like crap afterward? Did I really need 2 servings of that dinner I made? Knowing the difference between what I need and what I want. That kind of stuff.

I hope that you all have a little insight on this. It is crazy hard to do this alone. My hope is that there is at least one other person struggling like me and that we can help each other. I don't want to eat perfect all the time. I want to ditch the all-or-nothing mentality. I want to feel like I am strong enough to take control of my health and get the most out of this life.

Where have I been?

Oh me oh my - I have been away far too long from blogging and there are SO many things I want to share with everyone. No, nothing huge and life changing has happened. Well, I did get a job (which is a time-suck) but no other real reason for not blogging except that I just feel inadequate. I'm not sure why anyone would want to read about me and my boring life, but one thing I realized while I was away is how therapeutic blogging really is for me. It enables me to gather my thoughts and speak my mind. That is a gift unto itself, just talking about what is going on in my life and letting it all out! If you, my readers, (gosh if there are ANY of you left out there...and I hope you will give me a chance) leave me a comment (some bloggy lurve) it is a huge bonus to my day.

So, I don't want to just spill my guts here in this post because it will be entirely too long for anyone to want to sit and read. So I will summarize some topics that I am sure will be in future discussion.

Baby fever: I've got it! Must be that biological clock ticking.
Woman issues: goes along with above topic and is thus far keeping me from above goal of having an actual baby, instead of just the fever.
Weight/Health issues: I'm a a slacker. I lost my exercise buddy (yes mom, that was you) and then my motivation to go to exercise. My hubby wants to lose weight too and that is a rant in itself. I've got about 30-40 pounds to shed before I'm at a "healthy" weight to procreate. Bummer.
Self-esteem: It has wandered off. Where did it go? I wish I knew. I'm hoping that by fixing the weight/health issues I can find it again.
Cat issues: As to not mix my blogs, I will post this on the life with 4 purrs. I know not everyone likes cats. There are a few that live in my house right now that I don't like either.
Crafty times: I will be posting on any fun things I create. My inspiration comes in spurts so I cannot promise it will be a regular thing nor can I promise the media will be consistent. I love paper, fabric and yarn. So the possibilities are nearly endless!

Well I hope I have not bored you with that. Look for a post at least weekly. I will try and be more on top of things, but I know I can promise at least one post a week to let you in on my little world. Thanks for listening!

For some reason, for the last week or 2 I've been using my old desktop. Perhaps it is the nicer keyboard and mouse? Or more probably it is the fact that the connection speed is much faster down here. I was reluctant to "work" on it for the last year because it is located in our basement, where we have boxes of old stuff that we haven't parted with, yet. Well we cleaned the basement a little and so my old trusty friend was more accessible and also more appealing. Well, as usually happens when I switch computers, I found some fun "old" pics. Let's reminisce, shall we?

My first apartment in Ruston, Louisiana. They tore them down last year to make more room for the university apartments...or maybe parking. Either way, its no longer there! Sadly, this place was decorated nicer than I feel my house is.

My awesome cake I made in a Wilton class in 2007. No. I haven't made one since. But I'm feeling inspired after seeing this. I took this class so I could do kids cakes...you know, when I get around to actually having kids.
From college, when Oscar was not quite a year old. Napping on my face was apparently the most comfortable place in the apartment. LOL! I don't look bothered by it, but then again I was probably crashing from an all-nighter!

I found several cute pics of the cats too and plan to share them later this week or early next. You don't want to miss the adorable-ness, trust me!

This past week has been bad for me. I have sat on my behind and eaten junk the whole time. So today I needed a change, so I hit the On Demand button and found Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred. Oh. My. Goodness! My arms are jiggly like jell-o. My legs barely made it down the stairs. I may need a lift to get back up them. But it is awesome. And I am doing it again tomorrow! I found the 2 weeks to a new you tab too. If I can stick with this for a mere 2 weeks, I know I will see results. I need a boost to get back in the groove. I haven't posted a weigh in lately since I've been losing and gaining the same 2 pounds over and over. So Jillian Michaels and FitTV are going to kick me back in gear. Wooo!

Numero Uno. I have recently become obsessed with Bob Ross and the Joy of Painting. I should say re-obsessed since I enjoyed it when I was little AND when I was in high school. My newest goal is to get up the guts to find and attend a Bob Ross-style painting class. Never painted in my life, but he just made it seem so relaxing (and easy, which I know CAN'T be true) Plus he has an awesome 'fro. Admit it. If you could be as chill as Mr. Ross and have a super awesome 'fro you totally would!

#2. I am also obsessed with my garden. It is the first garden I have ever grown myself (ok so the hubby did help a little...but really it was ALL my idea!) I check on it every day, sometimes more than once, just to make sure no rabbits are in there munching on my broccolli again. Silly rabbits! Why don't they go get a bowl of Trix or something? I have oodles of pictures of it, of which I have spared my lovely readers, and only posted twice about it so far. Look out though. We've been harvesting and my corn is taller than me. So there will be pics up very soon!

III. I love the crunch noise a Dorito makes when you bite into it, but only when I am really hungry for them. And I tell whoever is with me eating them (usually the hubs) how much I enjoy that sound. Over and over again. Until the bag is gone (snack sized bag...not saying I couldn't eat an entire regular bag myself, but those days are behind me. I have control now!) Oh and only the Nacho cheese flavor. That pic makes you hungry for them huh? Me too.
four. My cats just stole my rubber band ball. I kid you not. While I was sitting here one of them took it and now Oscar is carrying it up the stairs and batting it down the stairs, chasing it like a maniac, then carrying it up the stairs again. I better save it before anyone gets hurt. Or eats a rubber band. Buttercup ate one of my hair things once. Don't worry, it came out. Or else I wouldn't have known she swallowed one. Ew!

quatre. We call rubber bands gumbands here where I live. I refuse to say most of the slang, but I will slip and say gumband once in a while. I also say pop instead of soda and from my days in Louisiana I say y'all. So y'all ought to come over sometime and have a pop with me. :)
And Last. I may be a self-proclaimed cat person, but I love daschunds. I want one. so. bad. A long haired miniature daschund. Any color. I'm not picky. Named something like Gabbie or Peanut. They are just so silly and cute looking. I can't help it. Now to work on the husband...

My little handsome boy went to a new home yesterday. It was one of the hardest things I've ever done and I am trying to see this as a blessing, since it means that most of the people (and animals) I love so much are still in my life. I am finding this morning that I am really missing the pitter-patter of his little feet chasing toys up and down the hallway and his tiny mews to let me know he is ready for his breakfast. My cats had just begun to play with him, so I am sure they are wondering what happened to their new "toy". How can anyone bottle feed a tiny kitten and not let a piece of their heart go with them? One thing I feel in my heart is that this little guy needed me and someone had a hand in getting him to me. Surely God knows how I love animals and the strength and compassion I have in me. That is why I know, as hard as this was, I will someday be given another chance to help an animal in need. And I will trade them care and cuddles for their unconditional love.
Oh and as an aside, the Surfer suggested that perhaps when I reach my weight goal I can get another cat/kitten. Not sure how I am feeling about that right now.

He still has no name, although the Surfer said I could keep him. I am torn about that. It was fate he came to me, since he clearly needed me. But do I want this responsibility? Can my cats adjust to him? I certainly don't want behavior problems arising. But just look at him!This was what he looked like the first time he lapped out of a saucer. Kitty milk dripping off his little chin!I caught him sleeping like this Monday. Still a little guy, but growing like a weed!

Hard to believe Bunnie was once that little. She keeps a watchful eye on the little man. She hisses at him, but I've also caught her playing with him...so who knows what she is thinking.

Sorry everyone. Summer is busy, even for a gal like me with no actual place of employment. I've been taking care of the little kitty and he is growing like a weed. He just finally got off the bottle one week ago and has been on KMRs weaning formula. He was "behind" since he missed the bonding of his mama so he wanted to bottle feed a little longer for the cuddles and attention. Not that he gets less now! He is a sweet little boy - when he is not running around like a nut! We may keep him, we may give him up. I just have to decide if that person is trustworthy to care for him properly (ie take him for his shots, get him neutered, etc) Its hard to trust someone who has adopted and then taken back a kitten after a short time. Any advice on that?

Getting back to what I was originally posting about: the red, white and blue swap was AWESOME! I swapped with one of the twins from The Two Twins. Oh my goodness my box was filled with wonderfully awesome goodies.I know, you're jealous right? You totally need to get in on the next swap! And dummy me found more stuff I missed in the box the next day (no pics of them, sorry) Yep all the stuff above plus 3 yummy smelling candles and 3 lipglosses. Can a girls day get any better than this?
In case you can't see in the pic, there is also a book called Seven Loves (perfect for reading in the hammock!), a locally put together cook book (they are the best kind imho), three boxes of special K bars (red white and blue!), the cutest purse with an anchor keychain (been using this from the day I got it, LOVE it, THANKS!), and a bottle of white wine from their local winery. She was so right about it, sweet and fruity and awesome if sipped ghetto style with some ice. Wonder if I can get that anywhere around here? This was another awesome swap Mamarazzi! Hope to participte again in the future! And a huge THANK YOU to my partner! You truly rock!

I went to PetsMart last Monday for litter lioners and cat food but came home with this. Oh boy! This little kitten is 3 weeks old and needs bottle fed every 3 hours round the clock. This Weeks Weigh In

This week I am down 0.8 pounds! Any loss is good in my book and after all the temptations this weekend at the amusement park (cheese fries, funnel cake, need I go on?) I am glad it was a loss. Plus the Surfer decided to take me to Red Lobster for dinner Monday night. Super yummy, but not so point friendly - especially when you are REALLY hungry! I did a lot of walking at the park, which I think helped, and I've been trying to do some active thing each day (weeding, sweeping, dancing in the living room like a goober, you get the point)
This weeks goals:
1. Keep up the tracking, it gets hard, but it is so worth it!
2. Stay active - get at least 3 AP in or more!
3. Cook at home more this week. This is a huge help since I can control everything that goes in AND portion sizes. Does anyone have any good and easy ways to plan healthy and husband friendly meals? I'm in need of a little help!
4. Notice and possible document how I feel when I track and eat filling foods vs eating the crap I usually eat. I know I feel better when I eat better, but to have the proof in writing as a reminder might help. I mean, why else to I still overeat?
Another great thing is that I have been feeling better about myself just because I AM doing something rather than being passive and accepting my weight as it is. That is something to be proud of!

My New Feathered Friends

I decided this weekend to move my existing feeder to a new location and add my hummingbird feeder as well (since one little female has been spotted several times already!) My finch feeder has gotten little to no action at all...until I moved it! I now have at least four goldfinches that visit together and munch away at the seed! They are just so bright and cheerful and I can watch them from the kitchen window as they flit from feeder to hook and back again. I also have a few hummers that come and feed as well. Couldn't manage to snap a pic of them yet. But here is the new feeder! I planted wildflower seeds all around it and I am hoping they grow. I'll update if they do!

Face the Truth Tuesday (AKA Weigh in)

This week I rocked the Momentum program! I rocked it's awesome socks off! Yep, I lost 2.2 lbs this week! YAY! How did I do it? I tracked everything I put in my mouth. Every.thing.
I actually had a food breakdown on Saturday (with some thanks to the Surfer, who suggested all of these foods) and ate 2 doughnuts and a burger and fries at Red Robin. Do you know how terrible Red Robin is for you? My burger alone was 26 points! Yikes! So it ended up that I went over my weekly allowance but kicked myself in the rear and make it up with exercise. Who knew that you could do that? This is NOT something I would ever recommend (cuz it sucks), but at least its good to know its there.
One kind of frustrating thing, that I hope to not let happen again, is that big gain that happened on vacation. I finally am back to the weight I started at when I restarted...uhm 5 weeks ago. So now its time to kick it up and get down to my 5% I set at that time - so I can buy this!
Isn't it cute and so appropriate? A flying piggy - my pounds flying away, never to return (cuz they've been replaced by the piggy, duh!) Seriously though, check out Alliteration's etsy shop. She has some super cute stuff there! Anything you are using as motivation?
So goals for this week:
1. Keep on tracking!
2. Eat a few more fruits/veggies
3. Keep up the exercise - I've been gardening a lot, so that has really helped too!

As per previous post, I have been a bit busy getting things planted and such and therefore totally forgot to do my weigh in post. We have changed our meeting day to Tuesday, so I normally would have had 2 more days to track and exercise, but I lost 0.4 this week. After all the damage I've been doing, I'll take it.
This week I have been tracking! After The Surfer reminded me of the success I had my first round of WW, I realized that monitoring myself is a big key. So I hope to see these results on the scale. With all the gardening and yard work activity points, I'm bound to lose a little something (and I am really hoping that its not going to be my mind.
So my goal for this week:
Track, track, track!
I know if I can stick with this for a few weeks it will become a habit and I just need to keep it up!

Ouch!

So I have been absent so far this week do to some major yard work. The surfer decided to finish, or very nearly finish his landscaping in the front yard and we also created a HUGE garden. Well huge to us, since last year all the veggies were basically in pots. So yesterday I shoveled and carried buckets of mulch in the morning for an hour and a half and then last night we covered the garden with mushroom manure. My back is killing me, my shoulders are killing me...the only things that aren't sore are the muscles that probably need more work (ie abs, buns and thighs!) So tonight the plan in to till the manure in and then tomorrow I will be planting ALL day - weather permitting!
I will take pics of my finished garden, since I admit this was sorta my idea. And the positives way outnumber the fact that I can barely move this morning or the fact that I tossed and turned (very carefully) all night long. Here's to a bountiful and healthy harvest!

Time to fess up

I'm really embarrassed about this. But I know I have promised to be honest about my wieght, so even though it was a terrible 2 weeks (with vacation thrown in there) I went to my WW metting. I gained 3.4 lbs. Holy cow!
I am suddenly an eating machine. I can't seem to stop myself. Have you ever heard of "Last Supper Syndrome"? You know, where you subconsciously believe that it will be the LAST TIME you ever get to indulge in your favorite foods? That is what I have been like. On vacation I had fried seafood platter (did I mention I love sea creatures breaded and fried?), salmon oscar, chips, Mexican food (Oh how I LOVE Mexican food!), and TONS of ice cream...and I paid for it at the scale. I don't know why I can't get my brain to register that I can still have my faves in moderation. So my goals for this week are to really push the water to get all that "bad" stuff out of my system, exercise 15 mins a day, and also to get some fruit/veggies at the farmer's market to snack on so I don't go on the rampage! I raise my water bottle in a toast to a better week! Here, Here!

Well...this week was a bit rough. Yes, I know it was my first week and I should have been awesome. Yes, I had cake and ice cream AND a Mother's Day Buffet...BUT....
I lost .8 pounds this week. Not too bad. I know that drinking water like crazy was a huge help as well as eating more fruits and veggies. I also realized that I love sugar snap peas. They are so wonderful...and I plan to stock up on them when they go on sale!

Guess what!?! I got a job interview! A real live in person job interview. I don't want to give too much away right now, but it is with a government agency and it will involve me actually doing something sort of biology related, and NOT in a lab! I was so excited when I got the call yesterday, I could hardly contain myself. I've been out of school for almost 5 months now, so it is about time. I was just filling out an application for Sephora too, since if I can't get a job in my field I would love to learn all about the skin care lines they carry...but hopefully with all of your positive vibes and prayers coming my way, I will land this job!
So please keep me in your thoughts on the morning of May 29th. I appreciate it and promise to reciprocate the thoughts/prayers/vibes back to each of you.

Oh Weekend, How You Haunt Me!

Well, I can't say I did absolutely horrible this weekend, but I was not on plan the entire time either.

In the effort of trying to look at the POSITIVE, here are the things I did that I am proud of:
1. My mom and I took a walk after my grandfather's birthday dinner. She lives on a hill so we walked to the top and then back down. Got the ol' heart pumping and felt pretty good!
2. At said BDay dinner, I tried to fill up on veggies! Broccoli and carrots occupied about 2/3 of my plate. I had the smallest stuffed pork chop they had and only a small serving of potatoes. A far cry from my "normal" portions. And I was still full (maybe a little too full, but hey, I am a work in progress!)
3. At the Mother's Day buffet, I didn't stuff myself! I left there feeling satisfied! Amazing! I did eat some dessert, but after one small taste of the chocolate cake, I ate the icing and left the rest. I ate a sugar cookie too, which totally hit the spot. I also chose iced tea for my beverage instead of Pepsi (I have an addiction to pop!) and sweetened it with Splenda.
4. Last night, while watching Family Guy, I marched or danced to all the commercials.

So there you have it. Four big successes. And today is a new day! What successes did you have this weekend?

So, I went. I signed up. And now I am determined to lose!
My first goal is 5% and that is 9.6 lbs from now. This will actually take me back to my 10% goal that I had when I started a few years ago. I got there before so I can totally get there again! And I can remember how good I was feeling and how I my clothes were getting too big. I can't wait!!!

My goals for this week are to eat smarter by getting in lots of fruits and veggies. These are all considered "filling foods" so they have some staying power. So I am striving for 5 servings of fruits and veggies a day. Its going to be a challenge since the Surfer doesn't eat any veggies, but if I can get on the ball and prep them, it will hopefully make it easier for me to add them to my meals.

As some of you know, I posted a couple weeks ago about wanting to get healthy. Tonight I will make this even more of a reality. I, like many other people (and bloggers) out there, have decided to join Weight Watchers. I used the online program a few years ago to lose 20 pounds and then lost an additional 20 with my mom just this past year or so. Well, I gained 10 of those back (by my scale)! And knowing what I know about WW, I know it will work if I can just "work" it.
I hope that by admitting my current weight struggle, I will be held accountable by you, my readers. Trust me, I need support here. I am married to a meat and potatoes man who loves to eat as much as I do. I have family members who are food pushers. I have a weakness for sweets and I prefer sitting on my rear to working it off in the gym. This will be a struggle at times, but I am hoping for your support and encouragement to make it through. Since all scales are a little different, I will be posting tomorrow about my current weight and my goals. My first big goal is to lose 10% of my weight, but I plan to set little goals as well.
My doctor also had a lot to do with why I need to lose some of this weight. I have acid reflux and am taking medication to help heal my shredded esophagus. By decreasing my weight, changing my lifestyle, and learning to eat better, in a few months I will *hopefully* no longer need to take this medication. I am 27. There is no excuse for having to rely on medications for something which could potentially be avoided by getting healthy.
So are any of you trying to lose weight, maintain a healthy weight, exercise more, or generally being healthier? I'd love to hear any tips you might have!

Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce-Review and Giveaway

I was excited when I was contacted by County Bob's to review their sauce. My husband LOVES all kinds of sauces and even mixes them together at times. He loves to dip anything and everything. So how perfect is that?
They were kind enough to send me 2 bottles of their original all-purpose sauce to try along with brochures that had some recipes to try inside. When they arrived, my husband wanted to open a bottle and he smelled the sauce and tasted a little. He said the sauce was pretty tasty.
So we planned for a cook out the next day with my parents and his mom. This way we could all try out Country Bob's Sauce together. We made some hamburgers and I added some garlic powder, some dried minced onion and some Country Bob's. We grilled the patties and added some more Country Bob's under the cheese we topped them with. I topped mine with lettuce, tomato, a little red onion, a little more Country Bob's, and a bit of mayo.

Looks good huh?

On my first bite, the sauce kind of squirted out, but it was so fabulous tasting! We have a winner here folks! Everyone thought the burgers were so tasty, my mother-in-law even said she thought they were better that her favorite local burger joint! Perhaps that burger joint is merely missing the key ingredient: County Bob's All-Purpose Sauce!

I also prepared the Abercrombie Sauce recipe from the website. I think I will be smothering some chicken in it later this week and grilling it. I will be posting on how that turns out as well.

Feel Good Friday

Today is Friday and that gets a big Wooo Hoooo from me. This means that we are almost to the weekend where I get to hang out with my husband (and most likely our parents at some point as well). I don't know what it is about Friday that makes me so happy. Really since I am still unemployed it is no different than any other day for me, but the promise of getting to be around the ones I love makes it a little better than other days.
On another note, I am trying to get myself a little healthier. I have been trying to exercise at least 3 times a week for 30-60 mins each time. Not too shabby. I just read in my Weight Watchers magazine that to lose weight you should exercise for 60 mins 5 days a week. Seems like a lot huh? But really, you don't have to do it all in one shot. As long as it averages to that, you are doing great! So after I get this 3 day thing down, I will keep adding on. I normally say I want to get skinny, but I have changed my mind a little on that. I want to feel good! Here is why:
1. I have been having heartburn for a few months now. When I was down about 10 lbs from what I am now, I never had this problem. I know weight is a factor. I also hate feeling like crap at night when I lay down and the burning starts. I guess I should also see a doctor, even though it frightens me a little bit. I am not fond of tests or needles. I guess I can hope I don't need either of these...
2. My knees have started hurting. I am 27. This to me seems ridiculous. I want to be able to go for a long walk and not start feeling pain. Did you know that when you walk, you put three times the weight on your hips and knees? That means that for 10 lbs you loose, that is 30lbs of pressure off your knees! So a little bit really can go a long way!
3. Ditto on my feet. My heels hurt, but this is nothing too new. Its only when I stand or walk for a long period of time.
4. If/when we decide to have children, I want to be healthy. This way, there is a better chance that the pregnancy and birth will go better. Plus, I want to be able to teach my kids how to stay healthy and how can I do that if I am unhealthy?

So there you have it. They say that if you commit something to writing you are more likely to stick to it. I hope that is true. My progress so far is that I have done 2.5 hours of exercise this week and will be swimming tonight for my additional time. I may even exceed my own goal! YAY!

So like tons of people out there I have begun to tweet updates on Twitter. And I love it. I have had fun tweeting back and forth with others and just seeing what the Twitter world is up to. But there is one thing that has me all sorts of confused. That would be the lingo. So in an effort to educate myself, I am sharing my findings with all of you. Yes, I know you love me. :o)

The @ symbol is used for 2 different things: at replies and mentions. An @ reply starts with the @twitterid Blah Blah Tweet Tweet Blah.
The mention looks more like Giving props to @TwitterID for an awesome blog post, or something like that.

RT = Re-Tweet, meaning someone has already tweeted about this topic, but is tweeting again cuz it is such an awesome tweet, like this one:

And the symbol I was most confused about: #
What the heck does the hash mean? It is a way to tag your tweet for that word. So if I post #lifewith4purrs it will track the tweets with that in them. For more info check this out.

St. Martin

So I realized I didn't put up a post about the fun we had in St. Martin! So here is a recap, I'll try to be brief.
In St. Martin we went on the Golden Eagle Catamaran Sail and Snorkel. Oh what FUN! The Surfer and I love to snorkel. In fact it was our favorite thing we did on our honeymoon. My parents came too for fun, even though neither of them got in the water.

We saw some neat fish, sea stars, and brain coral. Then we went to a beach and swam for a while. This was also an all you can drink sail, so rum punch was had by all, not to mention that we were served by men in bow ties (no shirts, just bow ties) We had a great time!

St. Thomas USVI

I'm a bit late posting today, because I went to visit a close friend. She is expecting her first baby (a girl) very soon. In fact, they will be inducing her on Friday. She has been on rest for a little more than a week. Please keep her and baby in your thoughts and prayers as her time quickly approaches. I can't wait to meet her little bundle (hopefully this weekend!) and try to convince the Surfer that we should make a wee bundle of our own soon ;)

Getting back to the islands: Our second stop was at St. Thomas. What a beautiful view!We rode the Sky Ride up to Paradise Point, home of the Bailey's Bushwacker. It is a tradition that my parent's started the first time they went there, so we had to partake!

The Bushwacker consists of seven (yes 7!) different alcohols! And it tastes kinda like a chocolate shake, but different. You'll just have to try one. And Paradise Point has the "original" so might as well cruise there and enjoy!My mom would love to join you!

We also got to see a cute bird show with several kinds of parrots and tropical birds. One could even add and subtract by ringing a bell for the answer! I asked the Surfer if I could get a bird. He said "No!" Go figure.

This bird could ride a bike! Later he did it on a highwire!

We also saw some cool lizards, including an iguana. This is where I was reminded how stupid people can be. There were people petting the wild iguana and it was hissing at them. I don't know if it bit them, but if I were the lizard I would have given it my best shot!

I asked the surfer if I could get one of these lizards. He said "No!" Go figure.

It was a wonderful day topped off with a beautiful gift from my parents. They went jewelry shopping after leaving the Point and bought my a necklace and earrings made of black coral. They are peices by Bernard K. Passman and I LOVE them! The earrings are so dainty and the whale's tail pendant (not shown on the website) is so beautiful. I have always been in love with the sea, especially whales and dolphins, so this was very meaningful to me. My parents are so wonderful and thoughtful! Again I will say I am SO Blessed!

Where I was last week at this time

Last week, on my wonderful vacation, the Carnival Glory was docked at Nassau, Bahamas. We chose not to do any excursions here, but next time I will save my pennies. I want to swim with the dolphins so badly!
So here are some of the sights:I think I took 15 pictures of the lighthouse. I just loved the way it looked like the perfect postcard!A picture of Atlantis. I would have loved to check out this new resort. They also have a dolphin encounter and swim option, but since we had a tight budget we decided to save that for another trip...someday. They also have several aquariums and lagoons with stingrays and sharks and tons of fish. But I only know this from looking it up on the net when I returned. I think I may need to work there someday!
And when I move there I will need this huge boat, complete with accessory sail boat! Yep, can't live without that!

Check back later this week for more info and pics of the trip. St. Thomas and St. Martin were more exciting for us. And don't forget our fun days at sea!

I know I haven't been my usual chatty self this week. Getting back from the cruise was a real downer, especially when the reality sank in. When I left I had a possible job lead and when I returned all the positions at the staffing agency had been filled. So that was a little disheartening. My student loans are coming due again very soon as well, so this is a huge dark cloud hanging over me. But with all these struggles I am reminded of how one man was willing to sacrifice His life for me!

And I am rejoicing for His gift! If there is one thing I learned last week, it is how truly blessed I have been. I have a loving family who always supports me! I have a roof over my head! I have food to eat everyday! I am able to feed and care for four wonderful (and sometimes obnoxious) furballs! And I have fabulous friends IRL and in the blogosphere! And look at this view I saw last week! My blessings abound and for this I give thanks!

I hope that each and every one of you take time to count the blessings He has given you and know that when I count my blessings, I count YOU!

Helloooooo! I have returned from what I think was one of the most wonderful vacations ever and will be choosing a winner shortly. It's me!!
Yes, a mere 26 years ago I was celebrating like this:I believe the googly eyes belong to cookie monster and that a mere five minutes after this photo was taken my face was covered in blue icing. I was a cute little bugger, eh?

And in celebration of my special day I want to give something to my readers. The only thing is, I am not 100% sure what it will be yet. So are you up for a surprise? So the hubs...henceforth known as the Surfer (see first paragraph of this post)...and I took a trip to our local Cabella's this weekend. And by local I mean we drove about 65 miles to West Virginia. It is funny how I can search for summer sandals everywhere and then find a pair in the first 5 mins of our visit.
It is also funny how the Surfer hated every pair of sandals I picked out everywhere and found a pair oh-so-similar to them and loves them.Must be the atmosphere!

Job hunting stinks.
PERIOD!
It has been three months now and I haven't heard a thing. No bites. No nibbles. Nothing!

So now I am asking you, dear readers: Do any of you know any companies that would hire a recent graduate with her MS in Biology? I am very interested in doing environmental work, specifically field assessment and remediation. Do these jobs even exist anymore?

I went to a job seminar recently where I heard that one in six college graduates ends up working in a non-professional field. Isn't working as a professional what we've paid big bucks to earn? I hate to think of getting "just any job" after spending so much time and effort in earning my master's degree. It is frustrating and depressing...Why don't counselors tell you these things before you go to school?

A HUGE thanks to the SITStas who participated in the Spring Fling. It was tons of fun to check out everyone's blogs and the bonus was winning fun stuff. I was SO surprised on Saturday to receive a half apron that I won at Tiffany's blog Eat At Home. She has some fabulous looking recipes that I hope to try soon including Tilapia in a Crockpot (!) and Cheddar Muffins. Mmmmm!

My contribution to the family St. Patty's Day bash

My (wonderful!) mother-in-law cooked us a lovely St. Patrick's Day meal on Saturday. She has an eye for decorations and made the centerpieces (as she has ever since my husband was little). I'm picking up on this a little at a time, but I wanted to show you how cute her decorations were.
First, she made these centerpieces. See the little leprechaun?The other centerpiece did not have a leprechaun. We were told that he was "hiding" in the "tiny leprechaun trees" (AKA broccoli) and if we were lucky we might see him. I wasn't lucky enough to spot the other leprechaun, but I did get my own wee pot-o-gold!

The hubs even won $20 on his lotto ticket! Funny, the men at the party all won something, but not the women. We just got to clean up after!
For dinner MIL made corned beef, cabbage, carrot pennies, fresh green beans, scalloped potatoes, broccoli with optional cheese sauce (YES please!) and rainbow jello. I told you she always goes all out! And what was dessert you ask? My Gramma made my favorite pistachio dessert (with pudding, cool whip, pineapple, and mini marshmallows) and MIL brought THREE pies and an ice cream cake.
My *small* contribution (besides providing the house and helping with the cooking...don't want to sound like I did nothing) was making chocolate covered strawberries. Yum! So we had a wonderful feast on Saturday to celebrate. Did you do anything fun for St. Patty's? And just for the record, my MIL's motto: Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day!

Today my order from Close to my Heart arrived. Oh my goodness I am in card maker's heaven right now. I decided to splurge a little so I could get a hostess pack at 50% off. This was SO worth it. Look at all the stuff I got! And this isn't even including the stamp sets I ordered and/or got for free! I am so inspired that I am overwhelmed. Add to this the great swap I received on Saturday (more on that later) and I will be one crazy craftin' lady by tonight. Weeeeeeeeee!

Friday's Five

For some reason, I've been wanting to blog about clothing trends that drive me crazy. Perhaps it was the post that I read the other day regarding the trend of PJ pants in public. I am so sorry I can't remember where I read it, and I have searched and still can't find it. If it was you, PLEASE tell me and post a link to that post. Thanks!
And here is where I claim to have NO fashion sense what-so-ever, so please realize this. I do not claim to know anything about what people should wear.
So here are the top five things that irritate me when I am out.
5. Going along with aforementioned post, Pajama pants. I love to wear them around the house, but not to the store OR to dinner. Even I get dressed at some point during my day!
4. Clothing that costs extra for bleaching, wearing, tears, etc. Why in the world would you pay extra for holes in your pants?
3. Uggs with sweatpants. Who the heck started this trend? IMHO it looks sloppy and terrible. Put on some real pants if you need to wear your Uggs.
2. Boys who wear their pants too big or too small. Either way I end up seein' your butt when you bend over. There may be someone who would enjoy this. It. is. not. me. Save it for that person.
1. Thongs with low riders. NO ONE wants to see your cheeks when you sit down. Especially not when you are trying to eat. Again. Save it. PLEASE!
So there ya have it. Any trends that really irritate you?

Thankful Thursday

Today I am feeling SO thankful for the weather, which promises to get better this weekend. I am thrilled to see the temperature rise to the 50's and 60's. Especially after the days that have been in the teens. I plan to fully absorb this warm weather all weekend long. I will be going for a few walks in the park and perhaps planning my garden space for this year and deciding what to plant. Oh the promise of Spring!

Swing Vote - Review

We rented the movie Swing Vote over the weekend starring Kevin Costner (among other notables) who plays a drunken idiot (Bud) with the power to choose the fate of the American nation. Yes, the election comes down to a single man's vote. And yes it could happen, though it is extremely unlikely. The portrayal of the two party's candidates had the hubs and I chuckling. And the sheer fact that both candidates would do whatever it takes to win this vote really drove the message home. They would sell their first born to be elected. As they switch political sides both seem to realize that this is not what they stand for (how novel!) and Bud realizes that he needs to be a better father and a better (and informed) American. I'd give it 3.5/5 stars. Its not fair that Bud was a drunk and neglectful father to such a wonderful and intelligent little girl, but I don't believe that was the point this movie was driving at.

No way I could EVER resist this!

And last for today, four foster kittens I had this summer: Hailey, Happy, Harry and Honey. I miss them all! And by the way, the 2 that won't stay for a nice group shot (Harry and Honey) were adopted by my Aunt. They are now Danny and Dolly and spoiled and they should be. This is why I can't foster anymore. I get so attached I can't even bear the thoughts of putting these little guys and girls into cages!

It all started back in October. All of my cats were healthy back then. Until we noticed Buttercup's skin was covered in little red scabs. At first it was just a few around her neck and on her behind. Then they got bigger and didn't want to heal. So off the the vet we went.
Buttercup went on her first round of steroids to clear up the spots which were an allergic reaction to something (allergic dermatitis). We weren't sure what at the time. So she went on Advantage to eliminate fleas as the culprit. Basically allergies are determined by eliminating the usual suspects one at a time. We had to cancel the follow-up (not recommended) due to some scheduling conflicts. But Buttercup was looking better, so we weren't all that concerned.
In the week that all this was happening, Bunnie's chin swelled up. At first I attributed it to teething (since she was!) but then it got bigger and off to the vet we went.
Bunnie had an allergic reaction called an eosinophilic granuloma complex, EGC, which is another form of an allergic reaction. The vet thought it could be their food or water bowls. They were all plastic. She recommended they be replaced with either metal or ceramic dishes. And then she gave Bunnie a shot of steroids. She also said that this could come back later if the allergen wasn't removed. It hasn't yet...and we are so thankful for that, but I digress.
Getting back to Buttercup, about two weeks after I had Bunnie to the vet, Buttercup's spots came back, and then some. So off to the vet we went, again.
She was placed on steroids again, her Advantage was increased to every 3 weeks instead of 4, and she was put on a food trial for two months. Let me tell you about this food. While I think it is great, it is so bloody expensive! It was $36 for six pounds of food. Yes, that is $6 a pound. We don't eat that well! And the cans, haha, the cans were $2 a piece. So I fed her separately for the two months to the annoyance of the hubs.
And then the holidays happened and so did Oscars disease. In between Christmas and New Year's we had the family over and Oscar starting "digging" under the tree. He went back several times to finally urinate about a tablespoon of red liquid on the tree skirt. He was clearly distressed and in pain and I was in tears, but there was no way we could afford to take him to the animal ER. Plus he was eating and drinking, he just clearly had a urinary tract issue.
The next day we got him into the vet. They gave him subcutaneous fluids to make his urine diluted. They put him on two different medications, special canned food (really really smelly food I will add) and told us that if he did not block over New Year's, he would get through this instance, but something would have to be done to assure this did not happen again. Feline Urinary Tract Disease is common in neutered male cats. It is genetic. So there is very little we could have done to stop it. But in hindsight, we should have been feeding him more canned food instead of being lazy and cheap and choosing to just finish off the dry food we had first. Canned food is good for keeping the cat hydrated and keeping the urine diluted even if he is genetically predisposed to get crystals in his urine.
Well, he made it through (Praise the Lord!) and at his follow-up he was prescribed special dry food specifically for FUTD. It helps dissolve the crystals and satisfies Oscars need to crunch. He is on a diet of mostly canned food with just a bit of the UTD food 5/7 days a week. And now we pray he has a nice full life and never blocks up.
And Buttercup had her followup and everything looked good. We are now 99% sure it is a flea allergy. She is being weaned off the super expensive food and we are trying "sensitive" formulas of other OTC foods. As the vet said, it can't hurt to feed her a high quality food especially knowing she is prone to such extreme allergic reactions.
So life with the cats was good. We had Bunnie spayed on Feb. 5th and we thought all the cats were well.
Until this Tuesday. When I checked Bunnie's belly and there was a hole in it. A hole about the size of a pencil eraser. So I called the clinic that did her surgery and they suggested that seeing my vet would be best, but they would see her if I wanted to bring her in. I didn't want to stress her out any more than necessary, so I called my vet and they graciously squeezed me in that afternoon. Turns out Bunnie had an abscess that ruptured. The infection was most likely caused by her body's reaction to a drainage tube or suture material used in the surgery. And I am rolling my eyes at this point writing this because it seems so ridiculous to me that one cat household could have so many issues in a 4.5 month period. I've had cats my whole life and never had this many issues. So Bunnie is on antibiotics for a week and gets a warm, moist compress on her belly once a day until Saturday. If her wound does not look like it is improving by her follow-up next Wednesday, she will have to undergo surgery to remove the dead tissue and what is left of the culprit. Nice, huh? So we are praying that she gets better without the additional surgery. She is only 8 months old. This is just ridiculous.
And here I was thinking I was ready for human children...I can't even imagine the stress involved.

He brought the beach to me!

In honor of Valentine's Day and the SWAK challenge (see button on sidebar for more info) I want to tell you one of the most romantic, thoughtful, and caring things my husband has ever done for me. We weren't even engaged at the time. *sigh*
Those who know me know that I look forward to going to the beach every year. I love the ocean and always have since I was little. I was the little girl who would do hand stands and flips in between the waves. To this day the ocean fascinates me and I think it always will.
Well, one year I had a summer internship where I was not able to go to the beach with my family. My favorite place in the world, the thing I looked forward to all year, and I wasn't going to get to go. Well, the love-of-my-life had other plans for me.
He went to K-mart and bought bags and bags of sand, a tarp, some inflatable rafts, daiquiri mix, floating candles, beachy glasses, beach chair, and towels. While I was at work, he created a beach for me on the deck of my parents pool! Is that not the sweetest most romantic thing you've ever heard?
As we dated, he was notorious for stopping by with flowers. When I had to get foot surgery and he couldn't be there, he left a bag of Hershey's Hugs and Kisses with a card in the door for me when I returned. He has always shown me how much he loves and cares for me. It seems minor to make sure I kiss him everyday this week. Even if I am not a fan of the silly winter beard he decided to grow. But the beard, my friends and readers, was yesterday's topic.

I've been holding off on this post for a while, but I'm afraid the time has come to address my husbands newest accessory. He decided to start growing a beard over Christmas and he has been wearing it ever since.
At first I liked that he was unshaven. He started to get that rugged, manly look about him. I'll admit it was extremely attractive albeit like kissing a sandpaper man. And then it started to grow...

On a positive note, he keeps it well groomed. In fact, I've never seen a man look at his face so often. I guess I can deal if it makes him happy. And he's promised to shave it off for my birthday!

Trying something new...

Remember the Bloggy Giveaways that I mentioned last week? Well I was SO lucky this time! And the ironic thing is that I won two things related to getting healthy. A definite sign unto me saying "Get off the couch and step away from the Oreo Cakester!" So I canceled my monthly pass to Weight Watchers in search of some new motivation. I know, it makes little sense to quit a program that has worked for me. I lost 20lbs with WW online and 20 more in meetings, but lately I've been slacking and I'm tired of counting points. (I've also gained about 5 pounds back.) I like their program, but its time for a change. And these AWESOME giveaways I won will totally help! So thanks in advance to the awesome bloggers who gave them!!!
The first awesome giveaway I won was from FoodieObsessed - a 6 month membership to MyFitnessTrainer. I registered today and checked it all out. I think this is going to be a great resource. It gives me a calorie goal for every day as well as a fiber goal. There is a place for inputting exactly what you've eaten or just putting in the calories and fiber you've had that day. Oh, and it figures this out based on your height, weight, and goals (mine are weight loss, getting healthy, and having more energy). Next it gives you some exercises to do. Tonight I did wall sits, a hamstring chair exercise, and 5 minutes of cardio. It was great! Even I can do 5 minutes of cardio!!! I'll keep you posted on this journey. I like the set-up so far and I love that it just tells you what exercise to do (though they are changable).
The second thing I won was from Erica at SuperMom's Health and Wellness. I won her 10 week online course called Supermom's Simple Steps to Healhier Eating. The class has begun and my first assignment is to write down my goals for the class. My goals are to learn how to chose healther foods, lose weight in the process, and learn to enjoy cooking healthy. It would also be great if I could find some options that the hubs will also eat. So how to hide veggies or meals that are good for me and don't involve veggies.
I am so excited about both of these great opportunities for me to improve my health and wellbeing. I can't wait to get off these excess pounds and to stop taking heartburn meds! Here's to a healthier me.

Why do I worry?

Clearly of the pair I am the worrier. My husband is like a surfer dude. He is so calm and cool about every situation. Like all that really matters is catching that next big wave. This is why we go together. He balances my worries.
Today I took Bunnie to be spayed. I know it is a standard procedure, but any time an animal (or person) is put under anesthesia there is that minute chance they won't wake up. I'm trying to stay calm. The other three furry monsters met me at the door when I returned from dropping her off. I'm not sure if they knew something was different, or they were just waiting for breakfast. Probably the latter. Usually she is in the same room as me all day. So now, even though I have three others in the house (somewhere), I notice her absence.
How odd is it that an animal can capture your heart? They've all got me wrapped around their little furry paws. But I like it.

UPDATE 2/6: Bunnie is feeling just fine. She was a little strange when we brought her home. The other cats didn't recognize her scent so they hissed at her and she hissed back. She was pumped up on pain meds and very hungry. I took her to bed with us last night and she never moved from the spot. She also snored at which point I thought "Great, two noisemakers in the bed!" but I got over it.

Taxes are done! WOOO HOO!

That's right. Last night the hubs and I sat down and did the fed and state taxes on Turbo Tax. Let me tell you how awesome it feels to be done with that.
My husband laughed at me the whole time because apparently I kept repeating the phrase "they are taking all our money" over and over. We got a refund. That makes it even funnier.
We still need to pay the boro, which is a pain, but that's minor in comparison. We will have to pay them though. Poo!

Six Rings for the Black and Gold!

I come from a non-sports watching family. I'm pretty sure this is due to my father's extreme rise in blood pressure when we do watch, especially the important games. I will admit, he gets us all fired up and makes it fun (for the most part). This was a most stressful game I have ever watched, and I'm sure others who watch more frequently than me will agree!
For good luck, my aunt set up a shrine on the TV including the cute little pumpkin wearing a mini authentic MSA V-guard Steelers hard hat and a Terrible Towel. She and my dad had to wear their own hard hats as good luck, since in the last Steelers super bowl, they worked (and I find it ironic that dad doesn't have a Steelers shirt. Clearly this will have to change!). Every person in the house screamed when Harrison intercepted and ran 100 yards for a touchdown! We were hysterical when Holmes made the catch putting the Steelers back in the lead! We swung our Terrible Towels to get the D pumped up in the last two minutes! And it maust have worked...afterall, the Black and Gold came through for us tonight! The first NFL Team to win SIX Superbowls! OH YEAH! I hope I have a voice tomorrow from all the screaming...

It's snowing, again!

Can you believe the crazy wintery weather we've been having? I can't remember the last time it snowed so much. Too bad it didn't do this for Christmas!
I keep looking out the window and watching the flakes fall. It is so peaceful to watch when you have nowhere you need to be. I've been enjoying watching the little birds out there too. We feed them in two different feeders. One is on this tree pictured (its a log house, cute, no?) and one hangs from our back patio. My feathered friends have eaten all of the seed again and are looking for a refill. Payday is Friday, so perhaps we will splurge on another bag for them. We enjoy watching them and they keep the cats entertained from the window.
We have several bold colored cardinals that hang out around the feeder as well as house sparrows, mourning doves, and dark eyed juncos. I love when the puff out their feathers to keep warm and look like fat little balls. I have a few sparrows hanging out in my bushed today and I will do my best to snap a pic of them so you can see how cute they are.

I'm in a sewing frenzy!

So last night, I finished this little cutie. It is a Wonder Wallet from Lazy Girl Designs and I am truly a lazy girl sewer. Their designs are always cute, quick, and easy. I made another one of the hand bags about 2 years ago and I have another one to do sometime soon. I am in need of a new purse for Spring. You can embellish with a button on the cover, but I made this for my SIL and I didn't know if she'd like the button. And this is terrible, she asked for one of these from me after last Christmas (yes that would be 2007) and I never made any more between then and now. So I hope she still wants one! I think I will tuck a gift card in there as well. She's sure to at least like that! :)

Look what I made!

I'm doing a little dance now because I finally pulled out my sewing machine and finished my Weekender Tote. I started this bag in a class and didn't get very far. I had my "bricks" sewn together and part of the outside bag quilted. And I decided to do the most complicated programmed stitch for my quilting as well, so this took lots and lots of time. But today, I finished quilting the outside, quilted the inside, made the handles, and assembled this beauty all in one day! Yay me! I never get things done this quickly - and mind you I had to tear out one of the handles because I just didn't like the way it looked. This bag would be perfect for travel and I think it would be a cute diaper bag as well, although I don't have kiddos (yet). I might even load it up with scrapbooking/card making stuff! The possibilities are endless.
And for those who are interested, for my "bricks" I used a jellyroll called Flutterby by Moda. I love the way the colors look together! For the lining and pockets I just picked up a coordinating color and print that I thought was cute from JoAnn's (one of my favorite stores!). Now all I need to do to truly finish it is get some matte board and make a nice cover so that the bottom is sturdy. If you would like to make this bag, you can get the pattern and instruction through Quiltsillustrated. The pattern also makes a cute luggage tag and a button loop to hold the bag closed. I decided to skip both of these for now, but may go back and do the luggage tag, just in case I decide to travel!
